FIREWOOD PROGRAM
Program Definition
The intent of the Tribal firewood program is to provide firewood to Tribal families and Elders who use wood as a Primary or Auxiliary heat source in their homes. The Coquille Indian Tribe Director of Planning, Community and Real Estate Services or his designee will review and approve of requests for firewood and or permits on the Coquille Indian Tribe’s Reservation subject to availability. Final authorization for firewood permits must be made by the Tribal Chairman, Forest Manager or by the BIA Siletz Agency Superintendent for paid permits.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Enrolled Tribal Member
- Non Tribal Custodial parent with eligible Tribal Children in home
- Foster parents or other guardians of Tribal Children
- Or as designated by Coquille Indian Tribal Council
Self Service Yard Programs - Self Service wood permits may be obtained from the Planning, Community and Real Estate Services Department (PCRES) at Coquille Indian Tribe Administrative Office.
Firewood Program #1
Primary/Auxiliary Heat Users (up to five (5) cords annually)
The Tribe has established a temporary wood yard with a stockpile of logs at a central location on the Empire Reservation. Subject to availability permits of up to five (5) cords annually will be made available to Tribal families who use wood as a Primary/Auxiliary heat source. Primary/Auxiliary heat users will have precedence over other self service yard users. Please read self service yard rules and procedures below.
Recreational Users (up to one (1) cord annually)
This program is for families who use wood for camping, backyard fires or other recreational purposes. Subject to availability up to one (1) cord per year per permit will be issued for this program. Recreational users will also cut from the temporary wood yard on the Empire Reservation. Those needing additional wood will need to obtain a permit from CIT Forestry Dept. (LRES) for wood that may be available on CIT Forest Lands in the Bridge & Remote area. Please read self service rules and procedures below.
Self Service Yard Rules and Procedures
- All Service Yard users must make an appointment with CIT PCRES maintenance to enter the Self Service Area for wood cutting or gathering. Do not enter Self Service Area without prior approval.
- You must possess your valid wood permit at appointment time as it will be initialed by staff as to amount of wood taken and date.
- Permits are for personal use only and cannot be sold or exchanged.
- Tribal members will be responsible for cutting and hauling their own wood from the stockpile of logs in the authorized area.
- Service yard users are expected to use proper safety equipment while cutting firewood. Hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, ear plugs, safety shoes and chaps are examples of typical equipment used in this type of work.
Firewood Program #2 -- Purchase from a firewood business
This program will allow for the purchase of firewood from a commercial or firewood business. This program is available for Tribal elders, disabled persons, or others with financial hardships living out of the local area. This program will be limited to $500 annually subject to availability of funds for the purchase of firewood. Purchase Procedures:
- You must complete an application for wood purchase provided by the Coquille Indian Tribe.
- Re-imbursement or payment to vendors will only be made if pre-approved and after proper documentation is submitted to Coquille Indian Tribe.
Firewood Program #3 – Elder and Disabled Delivery Program (subject to availability up to five (5) cords annually)
Pre-cut wood may also be delivered in the local area to Tribal Elders and/or disabled persons that have no other means of obtaining firewood. To receive these services contact Sheldon Chase at CIT Administrative Offices for further information.
